With more than 35 years behind it, Hospital de Barcelona has established itself as a benchmark for private healthcare in Catalonia. Located in the Les Corts neighbourhood, it has 350 beds, a team of more than 800 healthcare professionals and state-of-the-art technology to deliver comprehensive, efficient, patient-centred care.

Its innovative organisational model rests on three core pillars: continuous staff training, clinical efficiency and humane treatment. Together they make it an example of management driven by social value, committed to quality of care and to the sustainability of the healthcare system.

Sustaining care in a healthcare system at breaking point

From 2019 onwards, Hospital de Barcelona began to experience a progressive shortage of nursing professionals, made worse by the impact of the pandemic. Rising clinical pressure and widespread burnout among healthcare staff between 2021 and 2022 set every alarm bell ringing.

Care at risk

The traditional approach to shift management, a reactive, manual process built on last-minute emergency calls and endless WhatsApp message threads, became unsustainable.

Beyond saturation

Supervisors were running out of room to manoeuvre and staff were living under constant pressure, which had a direct effect on the quality of patient care and on the wellbeing of the teams.

I got to the point of thinking: one day they will call me to say there is nobody on a ward.
Natàlia Mimó, Director of Nursing Care
Solution

The platform that transforms healthcare management

The hospital was reaching the limit of what it could deliver without pushing an already exhausted team too far. And without nurses, there is no care.

Mercè Carreras, then Director of Nursing, led a strategic shift: bringing in a digital solution that would ease the load on the team without losing what matters most, human care.

Looking for real change, Hospital de Barcelona saw Livo as an opportunity to improve staff management and reduce workload, with a digital shift management platform built on two pillars.

Livo Interno

Lets permanent staff manage their own shifts, choosing from the options available for their speciality.

Livo Turnos

An external network of qualified professionals who can cover urgent needs or provide structural support.

Less pressure, more planning

Livo Interno has helped significantly reduce the workload of the centre’s staff.

  • Supervisors plan with greater calm and foresight, without relying on the team constantly going above and beyond.
  • Permanent staff can see and take available shifts proactively, regaining control over their schedule and their rest days.

Attracting new talent

External cover from professionals at other centres has made it easier to bring in new profiles who otherwise would never have worked at the hospital.

It is a hugely enriching exchange that brings new ways of working and new knowledge.

Conclusion

Technology in the service of care

As Natàlia puts it, “Livo is here to stay, and to grow”.

Adopting new technology is essential to keep pace with a changing healthcare sector and to keep improving care for patients and for the people who care for them. With the right tools it is possible to create environments where professionals feel supported, teams are aligned and patients receive the best possible care.

To care well, you have to be well yourself. This tool lets us do exactly that: care for the people who care.
