Getting your nursing degree recognised in Spain: a guide

To work as a nurse in Spain with a foreign degree there are two routes, and yours depends on where you studied. If your degree is from the European Union or the EEA, you go through recognition of professional qualifications, which is faster. If it is from outside the EU, you need full homologation. In both cases, before you can practise you must register with the nursing college.

Homologation and recognition are not the same

Homologation is the official recognition that your foreign training is equivalent to the Spanish university nursing degree. Recognition of qualifications is a different thing: a faster procedure that applies only to EU and EEA degrees and lets you practise without homologating.

Confusing the two is the most common mistake, and it leads to starting the wrong procedure. The rule is simple: where the degree comes from decides the route.

Which route applies, by where you studied

If you studied in the EU or EEA

Nursing is one of the sectoral professions with direct recognition. You do not have to homologate the degree: you request recognition of your qualifications from the Ministry of Health, under the Directive 2005/36/EC managed by the Ministry of Universities. It is the fast route, and in some cases it is resolved with the European Professional Card.

If you studied outside the EU

Here the only route is homologation of the nursing degree, handled by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. Your training must meet two conditions: a length of at least 3 years or 4,600 hours, and a split where a third is theory and at least half is clinical practice.

If the training falls short of those minimums, the decision may require complementary training or aptitude tests before homologating.

The documents you will need

The specific ones depend on the country, but the core repeats: the original degree and its sworn translation, the transcript or study programme with the hours per subject, the passport, and the documents legalised or apostilled according to the treaty with your country. Preparing them well from the start is what shortens the procedure most.

Homologating is not practising: college registration

With homologation or recognition in hand you still cannot work. Nursing is a regulated profession, so the final step is to register with the official nursing college of the province where you will practise. Without registration, there is no legal practice. Real timelines

Recognition of an EU degree moves in months. Homologation of a degree from outside the EU is considerably slower and very variable, and you should count on more than a year between the application and the decision.

That is why it is not a procedure to leave for the end. You can start it from your country of origin, even before moving to Spain, and arrive with the process already under way instead of starting from scratch on arrival.
